Construction
Construction
The Investing in Communities funded construction embedded S4L course started in Great Yarmouth working with Caister High School and Oriel High School, in partnership with Great Yarmouth College and the NLP S4L Team developing tasters into construction skills. Here the emphasis being on the lighter construction vocational skills in basic Plumbing, Brickwork and Woodcrafts. The scheme was further developed in partnership with the National Construction College, Bircham Newton, for students to experience the heavier skills of Scaffolding, Block Paving, Drainage and Groundwork and Plant operations, the whole programme covering 30 hours of tuition. Embedded throughout the practical skills were literacy and numeracy and Health and Safety Awareness, certificated by OCN linked to S4L at Entry Level 3. One of these students demonstrated such a high level of skills that he was offered a 360 degree excavator's intensive training course at Bircham Newton where he obtained his competence card and went on to be employed by a national construction company in Norwich.

The course was rolled out across the county working in partnership with colleges. It recruits from high schools, young people Not in Education Employment or Training (NEET) and homeless groups. A bursary system was given to CCN to enable students to buy into construction skills courses at the college and also to the National Construction College who offered more excavator programmes to NEET candidates from Norwich and students leaving year 11 at Fakenham High School.
Health and Social Care
Introduction to Health and Social Care - Tasters
Two six hour tasters have been delivered to Caister High School, Oriel High School and Sprowston High School. The two hours consist of jobs/roles within the health and social care sector and advice and guidance on courses/training relelvant to going into the profession. The schools which have the health and social care GCSE on their curriculum are keen to encourage the learners to sign up to the GCSE in this subject.
Introduction to Health and Social Care - 30 hour course
This course was designed, developed and delivered in partnership with Great Yarmouth College. It was delivered to Year 10 learners at Oriel High School and Year 10/11 learners from the Attendance Behavioural Unit in Great Yarmouth.
The course involved around a portfolio with three units which had to be completed. These were first aid, nutrition and a plan of a room designed for residents with a disability. The learners had to name and personalise three characters who were to share a house. The needs of the residents had to be taken into account each time part of the project was completed.
The learners had an outing in wheelchairs with a questionnare to complete to be able to understand the limitations with disability and to open up their thought processes in this area. The empathy shown after this activity was very mature and some good classroom discussions took part.
