It is estimated that there are at least 30,000 people living in Norfolk for whom English is not their first language. Recent Home Office statistics suggest that this number may be as high as 50,000 including 35,000 Portugese. 80 different languages are spoken in Norfolk. In the Thetford area alone there are an 12,000 Portuguese.
The Home office report also states "North Norfolk has an exceptional rise across all ethnic catagories in the 0-15 age group and has the highest proportion of person in the 'black' category than any other district. This will impact on teh adult population in the near future."
