liC - Bretts
Bretts will be an intensive support centre offering accommodation and key worker advice and guidance for vulnerable young homeless people. Based in the centre of Great Yarmouth. It will offer multi agency intervention for 14-19 year olds identified as being at the greatest risk by Great Yarmouth Borough Council's Leaving Care and Housing Needs teams. Due to open in 2008 Bretts will provide accommodation for 14 young people with individual bedrooms linked to social areas, laundry, café and staff rooms including a "move on" unit which will assist in the transition to independent living.
The project has been designed to meet the challenge of Great Yarmouth's homeless and poverty issues; where approximately one third of all homlessness in the area comes from the under 19 age group. Bretts will benefit Great Yarmouth's most deprived wards through direct community centred provision.
IiC funding will provide a Learning Zone within Bretts, offering resources and an innovative physical design that will engage and stimulate learners who have no qualifications and are currently removed and disengaged from any mainstream learning provision. A kitchen unit will enable the dvelopment of independent living skills, including healthy eating and budgeting. ICT resources and a flexible learning lounge will support the delivery of IiC supported HAVES* accredited learning programmes, including aspirations raising tasters, self esteem and confidence, short courses, and longer accredited Skills for Life courses. The Learning Zone will be available for a number of other groups including MAP, Connexions, YMCA, St Pauls Lodge (Hostel for young women) and GFS. In addition the facilities will support the new diplomas as they become available.
Bretts is due to open in March 2009
